About the Event Coordinators

Purpose: "The purpose of the Annual Philly Beer Geek Competition is to identify, exalt, and honor Philadelphia beer and the people who craft, celebrate, and consume it with enthusiasm and pride. To this end, we will select and reward, as Philly Beer Geek 2010, the individual who exhibits the greatest universal knowledge and passion for Philadelphia Beer.

Carolyn Smagalski is an enthusiastic personality with a penchant for bold, innovative beer and brewing. As a freelance beer-journalist, better known as "The Beer Fox," she focuses on the world of flavorful craft beer, zestful cuisine a la biere, notable brewing establishments and the landscapes that inspire classic brewmasters. She is an alchemist extraordinaire, pairing over 30 years of cooking experience with assertive blends of magical craft beer.

She is the recipient of the Brewers Association 2006 Beer Journalism Award in Electronic Media for her work at BellaOnline and is a contributing author to the internationally-published book, "Beer Hunter Whisky Chaser," with proceeds benefitting the Parkinson Society of the UK. She is a Certified Beer Server in the Cicerone Certification Program, a member of the Pink Boots Society, and is Beer and Brewing Advisor for the International Gluten Free Beer Festival. As a Certified Beer Judge through the BJCP, she has served in local Homebrew Competitions and as a Beer Judge at the Great American Beer Festival annually since 2007, at the National IPA Challenge, the Mondial de la Biere in Montreal, Quebec, and the World Beer Cup in Chicago. She writes about international beer for the BC Foreign Exchange blog at Beer Connoisseur Online and pens a column on Environmental Brewing in the newsstand version of Beer Connoisseur.
