Profiles in Excellence - Philly Beer Geek WinnersPhilly Beer Geek 2009 – Nate Gefvert![]() On March 12, 2009, Nate Gefvert sweated it out against five competitors to seize the crown as Philly Beer Geek 2009 at Manayunk Brewery & Restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA at the closing round of the 2nd Annual Philly Beer Geek Finals Competition. Gefvert trucked home a cache of prizes worth more than $1,000, including gift certificates for homebrew supplies and dinners, brewery hats, gift baskets packed full of vintage and specialty beers, beer glasses, Trappist Ale, beer apparel, a dozen books on beer and brewing, and growlers and cases of specialty beer. Spinnerstown Hotel & Taphouse, his sponsor, was presented with the official plaque proclaiming it as Home of the Philly Beer Geek 2009. Nate finds it hard to believe his reign as Philly Beer Geek 2009 is nearly over, but he is happy to carry the title for an extra 3 months – Philly Beer Week has moved from March to June, so Nate gets to reap the benefits of bearing the crown for additional time. Robson toted home a cache of prizes worth more than $1,000, including gift certificates for dinners and homebrew supplies, gift baskets packed full of vintage and specialty beers, beer glasses, and apparel, nearly a dozen books on beer and brewing, cases and kegs of beer, and an invitation to a special evening, cracking open beers from a secret beer cellar. Iron Hill Brewery, his sponsor, honored him with a special celebration, complete with glittering pink tiara, sash and scepter. For a true lover of beer, this was Nirvana. Steve finds it hard to believe his reign as Philly Beer Geek 2008 has passed so quickly.
